Recovery is the stated goal of mental health care, but recovery is more than simply managing symptoms – it’s about ensuring that a person can live the life they want, regardless of those symptoms.
At the invitation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, I took part in an extensive podcast on this topic. In this WHO/Europe podcast titled Mapping the Road to Recovery, recorded at the WHO European headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark, I spoke with psychiatrist Peter McGovern from Norway and peer expert Michael Ryan from Ireland about what recovery truly means, how living with a mental health condition can be a form of expertise, and who needs to be involved in building recovery-oriented services.
Thank you to Jason Maurer, WHO Mental Health Advocacy Consultant, for being an excellent podcast host, and to the wonderful Melita Murko, Technical Officer for the Mental Health Programme at WHO Europe, for the invitation and warm hospitality.
