Irish Mental Patients’ Educational and Representative Organisation (IMPERO)

Organization operates in Ireland. Mental patients may become members. Others may become associate members.

Objectives and aims: To reduce the isolation of mental patients and to improve conditions generally.

Activities: Organization has recently organised classes in conjunction with the Louth Meath Education and Training Board. Photography, Public Speaking, Creative Writing. The general idea is to improve the capacity of members to advocate and communicate.

REE Recovery Experts by Experience

Nationwide group in Ireland. All the members are survivors of psychiatry.

Objectives and aims:

To lobby for human rights (as per UN CRPD). Specifically:

  • to ensure that Advanced Healthcare Directives are recognised equally for people subjected to involuntary treatment under Mental Health Law
  • to provide legal recognition of the right to be free from practices such as involuntary ECT.

Activities: 

  • Submissions to UN CRPD Committee
  • Lobbying parliament (Dail Eireann) re legislation currently on the books: Amendments to the MH Act 2006 and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act
  • Educating and lobbying parliament members about our rights as per UN CRPD
  • Educating Departments and civil servants drafting this legislation about our rights as per UN CRPD
  • Educating the media and public about our rights as per UN CRPD, e.g. letters to newspapers, and engaging on social media.
